Since we've had some updates since I reported this, I checked again. Files that had bad preview still do. Tried "save as" with PDF compat turned off, close and reopen, save as - pdf compat turned on, still broken preview. Create new file and paste all contents of broken preview file in new one, save - new file previews perfectly. When opening a PDF and saving as AI, Illustrator somehow does not clean everything properly - it creates a file that Win Explorer (at least in Win 7) can't preview. And you can't see a preview when browsing from ID to place a file.

Depends on what other tools you have,. Actually, recent versions of Word will open PDFs (!!!) and let you do stuff. Or, the paid version of Acrobat lets you select text and graphics for editing externally - but it seems to only work with Adobe Illustrator. If you have Illustrator, you can open one or several pages of a PDF and edit as you please... All of the above tools have their place and abundant shortcomings. Your choices largely depend on how much work you have to do and what you think your time is worth.

Be cautious. It will detect "differences" and claim that text has been removed and inserted, when in fact it is the same text. It also doesn't track across page breaks, so if your pagination isn't the same across both docs, it will flag more "errors" You may be better off exporting to Word and using Word's file compare.

sorry, I haven't read the entire grisley thread - But numbering afik, is according to thread sequence and anchor location within thread. So you should be able to have things scattered all over a page, and have then numbered according to their anchor locations - if they are anchored in the story, the numbers should be sequenced according to how the anchors appear - they could be all on one otherwise blank line, or positioned in the thread/story wherever their number needs to belong. The items that have to number (captions?) can float anywhere - don't have to be inline with the anchor. Or is that not what you're trying to do?

Another late reply - yes, I always save AI files with the "PDF compatible file" option selected. I guess if I were really curious, I could go spelunking into the bare files, and figure out the differences between a PDF-originated AI file and one created with data copied from the PDF-originated file. Not going to attempt that right now...

Pop-up? well, I'd rather just have a setting for default handling. In my workflows, there is never a time that I want to create overrides. I guess a macro should be do-able for this, but I've resisted learning macros beyond VBA in Office. Maybe I need to get ambitious and learn it here...

That's really a question for those who develop with/integrate AIP for your environment. Reader is not intended for PDF revision/editing, aside from a few things enabled by the PDF generating software. Acrobat Pro has various macro capabilities that other software could use, or there are other software packages that can edit PDFs. I doubt that AIP will be able to work through Reader alone

how was the document created? Doesn't Reader require that the pdf have certain properties enabled in a document before it will attempt to sign it? Maybe the PDF has a problem.

Of course - but I shouldn't have to. The merged text should become 'one' with the paragraph it is joining. Of course, if there were manual formatting in the merged text, I'd expect that to remain.

I expect that this is a setting or preference somewhere, but I don't see it - I'm working on docs in ID CC 14.0.2 on Win 7 Let's say I have some paragraphs 1, 2, 3 in one style, followed by para 4 in another style - If I delete para 3's end-of-para marker, para 4 joins it. Of course. But the text of para 4 now shows as overridden instead of taking para 3's style and formatting. - this isn't what I want - it should become part of para 3 and not keep its previous formatting. Please, what settings affect/control this? Thanks! Jay

I contacted support, at their direction we renamed the preferences folders. That didn't seem to do the job completely, so used the cleanup tool to remove both versions of Illustrator (had also v 22.1, I think) and re-install the latest. Not super great, but ok-ish now. Thanks for the suggestions. ( may be logged into a different account from my original post, but this is the OP.)

revised update - as of 20 Aug 2018, the previews don't work on many of these AIs, even if I open then, edit, save as, etc. So maybe resource issue with Windows? Don't see how that could be, as some previews work fine. Strange...

"Finder"? This is Windows... This was the general case - open one page of a |PDF, save as AI, trim and modify as needed. Preview is from first page of original PDF, regardless of how much I changed the graphic. ... and, the 'insert image' feature here is broken, says 'that image type is forbidden' for png, jpg, and gif.

here's a version showing the path I added to serve as a fence - I recolored it red and dashed it for visibility. In the previous graphic it is there but stroke and fill is the 'almost white' I described in my first post. ID did not see that 'almost white' filled vector. So- is it visual contrast ID is looking for, or are there other factors?

Am in CC on Win 7. In my ID doc, placing various Illustrator graphics. Some of those graphics have images and vector art. ID's wrap/detect edges isn't working for me - ID finds some edges, misses others. I added a filled object to the bottom layer of the Illustrator doc and edited shape for ID to wrap around, gave it a white fill - that isn't seen. Changed fill to 250, 250, 250 - still is not seen reliably. So - is it color mode, or what, is needed for ID to reliably see edges in an Illustrator graphic and wrap text? The biggest problems seem to be in the areas of white background of the embedded image. - yeah, I should prob use transparency in the image. But still - why the <bleep> won't ID wrap around these filled vectors in the Illu graphic?

Update - as of ver 22.1, it seems to create previews even from strange PDFs. But also, am not seeing the preview issue with old files. Wish I had saved some samples. Perhaps some of what I saw was cured by some other updates on the computer, not just AI? if I create a new Illustrator file and copy content into it, it works fine. If I open a PDF and save it as Illustrator, it doesn't preview correctly. That's pretty much the bottom line. Opening a PDF seems to land everything in a single layer. with lots of clipping masks and compound paths. But those don't seem to be the issue, based on my experiments.

The workflow is, I often get someone's source documentation in PDF. Yes, we should get source. No, it seems we can't get the soruce. So - I open the PDF in Illustrator and save the useful chunks - graphics mostly - as separate files in .ai format, pdf-compatable. For whatever reason, those docs usually will not preview correctly in Win Explorer or when browsing from ID to place as a graphic. It seems there's some preview/thumbnail info from the original PDF that lingers in the AI file - even though it was a multi-page file, and I'm only using a piece of it from a page in the middle. It seems that, because I opened the PDF and then saved it as AI, Illustrator doesn't clear out the old thumbnail info.

I did see that there's a script or program out there that attempts to do repairs on a file that ID can't handle. I don't have a link right now, but look around. It seems that even if ID fails, the file may be repairable. Good luck!

And something that I should have mentioned in the beginning - it matters, because the preview also fails when browsing for a file to place when using Ctrl-D. Not just browsing around in the file structure, when Bridge or something else can easily be used. Is there an effective alternative to place a file (especially when linking a graphic onto a page of text) that lets you browse previews?

Re the thousands of files: In vba there are lots of samples showing how to select a directory and then get a list of files in that directory, so your program/macro can process each of them. (look in Word/Excel VBA forums for those) Re the script - I read the data doc once and put the info into a variable array, I think. The processed the doc, or the directory full of docs as needed. It probably wasn't the most efficient or elegant approach, but it did work. And it could process a single file or a directory full of them. - can you script the current ID with vba? Again, prob available in the JS/Adobe domain, but I haven't attempted yet.

I know that it can be done in Word/Excel VBA, and I'm sure it can be done here. Unfortunately, I have not yet buckled down to learn Javascript &/or Id's object model. As a thought, at a previous employer, I wrote a script that would read a doc that contained destination names and the associated updated hyperlink destinations. It opened the doc to update, looked at each hyperlink, found its destination name from the data doc, and plugged in the updated hyperlink destination. It probably wasn't the most efficient or elegant approach, but it did work. - can you script the current ID with vba? Good luck!

After cleaning extra styles out from the various docs and re-syncing, I am not seeing the issue. So it must have been user error. Thanks for the suggestions. Hopefully these will help others as well.

Yes, we know there are lots of previewers. That is not the point of the question. My specific question was, "why do some AI files preview in Win Explorer, and some don't?" And "why doesn't AI know how to save files (created from PDFs) that will preview consistently?" Bridge is ok, but seems clumsy when I'm looking for content across various directories.
